FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How large is a team?
A: A team may consist of 2, 3 or 4 individuals to qualify for the team category. Teams must use a canoe.
Q: Are there rental bikes available?
A: No
Q: Are canoes or kayaks available for rental?
A: There are a limited number of canoes and/or kayaks available. Call Hungry Mother State Park (276-781-7400) for availability.
Q: Will the race be timed?
A: The race will be hand timed by former high school track coaches. Total and split times will be available for all participants on the website by one week after the event. Timing will stop after three and a half hours.
Q: Will there be prizes?
A: First, second, and third place prize winners in each category will receive a unique trophy at the event.
Q: What are kayak requirements?
A: Kayaks must not exceed 15 feet. Double paddles are allowed.
Q: What are canoe requirements?
A: Canoes must be at least 13 feet with single paddles.
Q: Will there be water available?
A: Water will be available at the transiition area. (Also in the lake)
Q: Will food be available?
A: There will be a post-race lunch for participants consisting of freshly cooked BBQ pork, baked beans, cole slaw and fruit. Pasta will be available for vegetarians. (Please specify on the application form if you prefer a vegetarian meal.)
Q: Will there be a charge for food?
A: The post-race lunch will be free for participants. Your assigned number will be your free ticket of admission. Non-participants may purchase the meal for $5.00
Q: What is the race course like?
A: You may evaluate the race course at anytime according to the hours of operation of Hungry Mother State Park. A map of the race course is available on the website link.
Q: Are safety devices required?
A: Helmets are required for mountain bikes. PFD are required to be in the canoe or kayak.
Q: What is the Mountain Empire Challenge?
A: There are four races in the Mountain Empire Challenge. The first event in the series is the Mountain Do Triathlon. You must participate in 3 of the 4 events to qualify as an overall prize winner. Other events are Flint Mill Spring and Grind in Bristol, TN, Bristol Challenge in Bristol, TN and Clinch Valley Spring in St. Paul, VA. Q: Is there a transition area?
A: Yes! The parking lot as you first enter the park will be used as the transition area. You will be able to unload your equipment on a first come, first unload basis into a parking place (which will be yours for the entire race). You will then move your vehicle to an adjacent parking area.
